Approximately 4,050 senior citizens enrolled in the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program have received special checks to use at local participating vendors throughout the six county two city area. $13,040 in checks was redeemed in July. Seniors may use their checks to purchase locally grown fruits and vegetables. Vendors have special posters displaying what items can be purchased with the special checks. The checks will be good through November 16th but most markets do not stay open that late in the fall. The following are number of seniors served by area: Bland - 50, Grayson - 618, Bristol - 209, Smyth - 791, Carroll - 1,026, Washington - 695, Galax - 127, and Wythe - 535.
